Reed Tetzloff

The American pianist Reed Tetzloff is one of the brightest stars of a new generation of musicians. He enthralls audiences with his “magical tone” (The Cincinnati Enquirer) and “ebullient” virtuosity (Gramophone Magazine). His rhetorical approach to the music he performs, along with a warmly charismatic stage presence, are frequently recognized as trademarks of his communication with an audience. 

He showcases his unique gifts as a recitalist and concerto soloist on three continents, having made his Lincoln Center debut with the Mannes Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall, and his New York solo recital debut at Merkin Hall, both in 2012. 

He has also performed concerti with the Beaufort Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, the Mississippi Valley Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, the Queens Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Symfonieorkest de Lier, the Tbilisi Symphony, and the Wayzata Symphony. His recitals have been heard across the United States, in China and in Europe. He has given an annual multi-city tour of Belgium in each of the past four years, playing to critical acclaim at major venues including De Singel (Antwerp), Flagey (Brussels), the Miry Concertzaal (Ghent), and the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth (Waterloo).  

A proponent of complex and often neglected repertoire, including that of the American canon, Reed Tetzloff is constantly engaging his listeners’ curiosity and broadening their horizons.  His presentation of Charles Ives’ masterpiece, the ‘Concord’ Sonata, was featured at the Mannes Sounds Festival in 2018, and the legendary American pianist Ursula Oppens described his interpretation as “One of the best I have ever heard of the piece,” hailing its “utter beauty and wild intensity.”

At the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2015, Reed Tetzloff was named one of twelve semi-finalists. His performances were widely acclaimed in Russian media, which dubbed him “the lyric hero of the competition,” and were noted by music connoisseurs across the globe. 

He has won prizes from major international competitions including the Beijing International Music Festival and Academy, Cincinnati World Piano Competition, Cleveland International Piano Competition, and the Tbilisi International Piano Competition.

He was awarded a Performing Arts Grant from the Center for Musical Excellence, and as a result, he released his debut solo album, “Sounds of Transcendence,” on the Romeo Records label in 2017. Reviewing the album, Patrick Rucker of Gramophone Magazine praised his version of the Griffes Sonata as “ranking easily with the recordings of Garrick Ohlsson and Stephen Beus as the finest available,” in addition to extolling his “refined touch,” “rhetorical aptness,” and “fervent rapture” in music of Franck and Scriabin.  

In 2018, he received a career grant from Charlotte White’s Salon de Virtuosi.

Mr. Tetzloff earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Mannes College (BM, 2014; MM, 2016), studying at the legendary Upper West Side campus with Piano Department Chair Pavlina Dokovska. 

In 2019, Reed Tetzloff was nominated an Artist-in-Residence with The Drozdoff Society, in whose Impromptu! Classical Music Recital Series he is a frequent performer. He has a residency in the Village Meridian Series in New York City both as a soloist and as part of the newly founded Gerlach-Tetzloff Duo, cello and piano.
